Thousands march on anniversary of Greek revolt

Thousands of protesters are marching through central Athens to mark the 36th anniversary of a student uprising against the military dictatorship.

The demonstrators headed Tuesday to the U.S. Embassy as part of the annual rally to mark the Athens Polytechnic uprising and protest American support for the 1967-74 junta.

Authorities say 6,000 police are deployed in Athens. The heightened security comes as fears of violence are rising before the first anniversary Dec. 6 of massive riots sparked by police of a teenage boy.

Rival student groups clashed briefly Tuesday during a march in the northern city of Thessaloniki. Police reported no arrests.
